PT Newmont Nusa Tenggara (PTNNT) reported a tragic accident at the Batu Hijau mine in West Sumbawa, Indonesia on Sunday, January 17, 2010, resulting in the death of dozer operator Mr Johanis A. Dawir.

Government mine regulators and local police were notified about the accident and the investigation process is under way. In addition, all mine operations in the pit have stopped pending investigations by the Department of Energy and Mineral Resources and PTNNT. The mine's management and staff are fully cooperating with regulators to understand the causes of the accident.

I am deeply saddened to report that one of our co-workers died in a tragic accident. We are providing Pak Johaniss family all possible support during this extremely difficult time. In addition, we are cooperating fully with government authorities to investigate the causes of this accident and learn how to prevent this from happening in the future, said Darren Hall, General Manager Operations PTNNT. "Safety is and must always be our first priority."

At the time of the accident, Johannis was operating a rubber-tire dozer when it was impacted by sliding earth.

The accident scene was immediately secured and efforts to safely reach Pak Johanis began in earnest. Pak Johanis was recovered as quickly as possible but unfortunately was confirmed deceased by appropriate medical personnel at approximately 2:55pm.

A loyal and valued employee for 11 years, 41 year-old Pak Johanis is survived by his loving wife Ibu Panca Henni Haryani and daughter Shania A. Dawir.

We will provide more information as details surrounding the causes of the accident become available.
