West Sumbawa In coincidence with commemoration of the 10th production anniversary, PT Newmont Nusa Tenggara (PTNNT) signed an MoU on assistance worth US$38 million (approx. IDR370 billion) for the governments of West Nusa Tenggara province and West Sumbawa and Sumbawa regencies. The fund will be allocated for construction of community development projects and social welfare programs.
The financial assistance is outside of the community development fund we earmark every year. We provide the assistance only for 2010, said Martiono Hadianto, PTNNTs President Director during the thanksgiving ceremony for the 10th year production at Batu Hijau, West Sumbawa on Monday (1/3). The assistance handover was marked with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding on the management of funds for community development programs in the province and regencies.
Hopefully the assistance will support the regional government in improving public services and health, education, and community welfare, he said.
10 years of operation
Martiono said that during 10 years of operation at Batu Hijau, the company has made many achievements in occupational safety and health, environmental stewardship and social responsibility. Despite many changes and obstacles, the company managed to pass the period thanks to togetherness and good partnership with the local government, people and employees.
Martiono added that among the achievements are Upakarti Aditama and Utama K3 awards for employee accident prevention efforts and Mining Environmental Management Award from the Department of Energy and Mineral Resources (DEMR), PADMA award for its efforts in Community Development Programs, Green PROPER award from the Ministry of the Environment, and an award from the Housing Minister for its efforts in building healthy houses for the people living near the mine area.
In this precious moment, we would like to express our deepest gratitude and appreciation to the government, people, and employees for their support, cooperation, togetherness, and partnership, he said.
Partnership
Martiono said Batu Hijaus mine life remains approximately two decades to come. Therefore, PTNNT will continue to carry out efforts to explore potential minerals within the Contract of Work area.
We believe that with all support and partnerships we have maintained to date, we will be successful in managing Batu Hijau mine and continue explorations in all Contract of Work areas in a sound, responsible manner in accordance with our values, i.e. demonstrate leadership in occupational safety and health, environmental stewardship and social responsibility, he said.
Managements optimism to develop Batu Hijau is also based on the fact that the local governments through PT Multi Daerah Bersaing have owned some portion of PTNNTs shares. As such, the local governments have interests and obligations to make PTNNTs operation a success.
In community development, we will continue to improve our performance in developing the community by focusing on four pillars, i.e. infrastructure development, improvement of community health, education, and economic welfare improvement, he concluded. ***
